You Should Spend Time with Your Kids Outdoors in New York City in the Winter and 3 Great Suggestions

Updated: Jan 11

Why Kids Need to Play Outdoors

Children today are spending more time indoors, glued to screens and computers.

But there’s a growing movement in cities to give kids the chance to play outdoors and enjoy nature.

It's been proven that kids who spend more time outside are healthier and happier than those who don’t get as much outdoor time. It provides a sense of adventure and it also helps to build a strong bond between the parent and the child.

There are many benefits to playing outside with your kids, including:

  • Building strong bonds between parents and children.

  • Teaching children about how to take care of themselves in the wilderness.

  • Teaching children about how to take care of themselves in the wilderness

They also have better social skills because they learn how to interact with others in a variety of settings - from playgrounds to nature trails - which benefits their development significantly.

In other words, taking your kids outside also makes them smarter, and we all want the best for our children, right?

NYC with Kids in the Winter

NYC can be tough for families with small children during the winter. But you don't need to spend your entire winter hibernating in the house. Here are a few ways for families with kids to enjoy their time in NYC this winter.

In this article, I wanted to highlight 3 of my favorite attractions in the city that are so much fun to do with the kids outside the house.

Experiencing Underwater Views at the New York Aquarium

The New York Aquarium in Coney Island is the home to over 500 different species of aquatic life from all around the world. It’s open year-round. Visitors can explore the exhibits and learn about these aquatic animals in a fun, educational environment.

This cool venue offers visitors a fun experience for kids or adults who love science, history, and animals. They have a large variety of exhibits with tanks where you can see oceanic fish

Ice-Skating in Bryant Park

Bryant Park is a public park located on the east side of Manhattan, directly across from the New York Public Library’s main branch.

You cannot visit NYC in the winter and miss out on this iconic venue featured in endless films and series.

Bryant Park is a popular destination for New Yorkers and tourists alike during the wintertime. The park invites guests to enjoy skating, ice-skating, festive lights, and more.

With plenty of trees to offer shelter from the cold winter winds, Bryant Park is a welcome change from the bustling crowds of other areas in the city.

Visiting Madame Tussauds Wax Museum

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum has many of your favorite celebrities and a great place to take a lot of great photos!

The museum has a wide selection of rooms and scenes. One of the more popular ones is their "Hollywood" room. The room is full of celebrity headshots from the late 1800s until the present day.

Your kids can also experience the Marvel Universe 4D movie. In this cinema, you'll experience special effects like chilling wind and water as they get closer to their heroes. Perfect for thrill-seeking kids!

The waxworks range from various famous people such as John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and John Lennon.
